Happy day before Earth Day!
In the News
- Abortion: A proposed 'personhood' law in Oklahoma that would grant embryos full rights as people from the moment of conception failed in the state's Legislature.
- Climate Change: STUDY: Climate Coverage Plummets On Broadcast Networks (mediamatters.org). NASA Image Gallery Highlights Earth's Changing Face (redorbit.com). Also, new studies suggest more Americans are starting to accept climate change as fact.
- Women's Rights/LGBT Rights: Legendary Texas activist Bettie Naylor died Wednesday night at age 84.
- Altruism: Twelve more billionaires have added their names to the Giving Pledge, the campaign started by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates in 2010 to spur philanthropy among the superrich.
- Evolution: How state anti-evolution laws evolved (washingtonpost.com) Also, a well-worth-your-time article over at npr.org: War Of The Worlds: When Science, Politics Collide.
- Atheism: Todd Stiefel, head of the Stiefel Freethought Foundation and supporter of efforts such as the Reason Rally and Rock Beyond Belief, was interviewed (surprisingly fairly) by Conservative site The Blaze. (Can't say much for the commenters, though.) Also, a new poll shows, unsurprisingly, that more people believe in God as they get closer to death. And American Humanist Association president David Niose writes in Psychology Today about why more nonbelievers are openly identifying.
- Education: Fixing Education: The Problems Are Clear, but the Solutions Aren't Simple (theatlantic.com)
- Women's Rights: Equal Pay Day was Wednesday, marking how far extra into 2012 women had to work to make the same as their male colleagues did in 2011.
