Climate change science gets more compelling as politicians fiddle |
washingtonpost.com |
The politics and the science of global warming remain far apart. International climate negotiators in Doha, Qatar this week began talking about a climate treaty to be agreed by 2015 and implemented by 2020, when all that was supposed to be finished in Copenhagen three years ago. Inspiring. Meanwhile, the evidence supporting the broad international scientific consensus on climate change is only becoming more compelling, with three big, peer-reviewed studies out this week alone. |

In Ghana, where deeply held religious beliefs unite much of the population, a new group has formed around a shared disbelief in religion. The Humanist Association of Ghana practices a philosophy that is mostly unheard of in Ghana, which a recent survey ranked as the most religious country in the world. Nonetheless, the group has already made waves in West Africa. |

Thanks to humanity! |
americanhumanist.org |
This Thanksgiving, before digging in to the holiday feast, many Americans will bow their heads in prayer. They’ll thank their god for providing them and their loved ones with the good fortune received over the year, perhaps specifically showing appreciation for the health of those gathered, the well-being of the nation, and the food before them. At the same time humanists, atheists, and other nontheists will be thanking a different source for the abundance they and their loved ones enjoy. |

Gore: Potential for Congress climate deal growing |
thehill.com |
Former Vice President Al Gore says a window is opening to work on climate change legislation in Congress. “I’m not saying we’re right on the tipping point. I know better than that. But neither do I think it’s accurate to say that we’re stuck in neutral. I don’t think we are,” he said in an interview with Grist. He said former climate change deniers are shifting their opinions in response to extreme weather events. |

Education In The Election: How Americans Voted On Key State Funding Measures for Schools |
huffingtonpost.com |
Tuesday was a big day for voters, and not just in the general election. With one eye on the country's next president, voters in several states were also casting their ballots for strong local issues -- namely, how their schools are funded. Education funding fell in more than half the states this year, and 35 are still spending at levels lower than before the recession, after adjusting for inflation. |

Secular America Wins! |
huffingtonpost.com |
After last night's election, secular Americans can do things they haven't done in years: They can celebrate. They can feel a smidgen optimistic about the future of their country. And they can stop prattling on about repatriating to Canada. For a while there, house-hunting expeditions in Manitoba seemed like a plausible course of action. After all, "secularism" in 2012 was the dastardly -ism whose name could not be spoken. Across nearly 18 months of garrulous campaigning, I counted fewer than a dozen references to the S-word by presidential candidates. Even less was said about secularism's preferred policy variant: separationism. The concept of a "wall of separation" was hardly ever mentioned, except by Rick Santorum, who reported that it turned his stomach. |

Newly Elected Congress Told: Don't Join Prayer Caucus |
americanhumanist.org |
The winners in yesterday’s U.S. House races are being asked by non-religious Americans to keep their distance from the Congressional Prayer Caucus. In a letter sent today by the American Humanist Association (AHA) to all members-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives, the AHA is asking them “not to join the Congressional Prayer Caucus and to actively work to ensure that the wall of separation between church and state is strengthened and maintained.” |

A Climate Change To-Do List for the Next President |
businessweek.com |
In the 2008 campaign, both candidates for president called for comprehensive action on climate change through a declining cap on carbon. This time around, the economy has taken center stage; while Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have presented different visions on energy policy, climate change has largely been relegated to the sidelines. Nonetheless, the magnitude and urgency of the challenge have not diminished. If we needed any reminder of that fact, Hurricane Sandy should have provided it—especially coming on the heels of devastating drought, record-breaking temperatures through the spring and summer, and a record low in the extent of Arctic sea ice. |

God's Plan for Rape Victims |
americanhumanist.org |
Women's rights have already played a big role in the 2012 elections, and rightly so. More than half of our nation's citizens are women, and it's about time that government officials give proper attention to the largest traditionally marginalized group. Unfortunately, not all the attention is positive, or even supportive. Shockingly, after all these years, essential human rights, like autonomy over one's own body, are actually up for debate this election season. |

"While there are some technical sessions," explains the EdTechTeacher team, "the focus is on creating effective pedagogy, enriching curriculum, and leveraging the device in order to support students and teachers as innovators." |

The evolution of creationism |

Throughout history, people have sought to understand how the world came to be and how it has changed over time. This curiosity has produced a rich legacy of science and philosophy and impacted and influenced religion and theology. In the November 2012 issue of GSA Today, David Montgomery of the University of Washington examines both the history of geology and of biblical views regarding Earth's origins. |

Chris Matthews berates climate change deniers amid destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy |
huffingtonpost.com |
Following the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, Chris Matthews laid into individuals—including politicians and major funders—who deny climate change theories. Matthews spoke to Professor Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University and Rep. Ed Markey about Republican politicians who do not take environmental reform issues seriously. Markey said that Hurricane Sandy "frames the election next Tuesday," which comes down to "Mother Nature vs. the Koch brothers." |

CSR, you may have noticed, doesn’t get a lot of column inches in the national newspapers. There’s a pretty good chance you may not even know what it stands for. Mention the words Corporate Social Responsibility to your average journalist and the shutters go up, a reaction born of a mixture of cynicism, scepticism, even boredom. |

americanhumanist.org |
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) has agreed to hear the appeal from a humanist family challenging a state law that requires daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag in public schools. The plaintiffs claim daily classroom affirmation that the nation is “under God” violates state constitutional prohibitions against religious discrimination. |
